Timber Outlook
Spring 2024—Foundation Studio—Kaja Kuehl
New York, NY
The goal for this project was to design a new home for The Climate Museum on a relatively small infill lot on the Upper West Side. The entire structure of the building was designed in mass timber built on a concrete foundation. Using mass timber the goal was to design a carbon negative structure with the intent of it being exposed, becoming a part of the museum and an exhibit in it of itself. The entire space is designed around a central CLT elevator shaft which becomes the datum in the museum. From that elevator shaft glue laminated beams resembling the braches of a tree come out to support the CLT floor system. All the floors are then unified around the atrium on the south facing side of the museum.
