Peoples waterfront community
Fall 2024—Homegrown Studio—Kaja Kuehl & Anoushae Eirabie
Designed in collaboration with Michael Humbert & Adan Arroyo
Newburgh, NY
Social isolation is a growing problem amongst young adults in Newburgh. This community development seeks to foster resident interaction by situating common spaces along shared paths of travel. These communal moments can exhibit diverse typologies such as spaces for cooking, entertaining, or performance.
The design demonstrates sustainability and affordability by limiting conditioned and insulated spaces to private residential units that sit along the perimeter of the floor plan, leaving public unconditioned spaces in the center.
The boundaries of new construction are blurred in the creation of a material inventory and reuse throughout the buildings to preserve Newburgh’s local aesthetic while creating a new model for adaptive reuse for future developments.
