The berm

Spring 2025—Limits of Visibility Studio—Paul Ruppert & Lafina Eptaminitaki

Designed in collaboration with Michael Humbert

Salton Sea, California

Exaggerated and loose in form, The Berm is inspired by the various lines which hide in plain sight at the Salton Sea’s North Shore.  From the various layers of ground that build up or peel away between the sea’s edge and terra firma, to the fading berm that now slopes gradually back to the surrounding desert, which itself is set against the backdrop of the surrounding mountain range.

The Berm seeks to establish a resilient and permanent artificial berm on the shore of the Salton Sea, providing the population of North Shore, as well as the Salton Sea community at large, with a cooling and community center safe from local site and climate conditions.

It acts as a shoreside screen blocking sand, particulate, and contamination from blowing directly from the sea back onto the community, as well as a place to engage with local art, business, agriculture, and provide the community with access to air conditioning, clean water, electricity, and information services.
